Skolfield Homes

Company History

Skolfield Homes got its start in Winter Park over 30 years ago. John Skolfield, its founder, began honing his skills at that time in remodeling and home repair. Through the years, John has been continuously immersed in the residential construction and remodeling industry. From simple home repairs to historic renovations; from analyzing difficult roof leak situations to building custom homes; from flipping houses (pre-reality TV), to building a residential contracting business; John has been involved in all aspects of the residential construction industry. The company he founded has grown through years of challenges, and rewarding experiences, never losing sight of the value of humility, introspection, openness, and a passion for learning new and better techniques. We offer a unique combination of a top-notch, efficiently-run business and years of hands-on experience, people who understand the business and the insight of individuals who've been there and done that!

Early on in John’s career, he developed an enduring friendship with Anthony Rizzo. Anthony worked for John Skolfield throughout high school as his apprentice, learning and enhancing his technical and communication skills. After high school, while attending college, Anthony worked as a Superintendent for a local custom builder where he gained exposure in the high-end custom home and commercial construction markets. Coming back to Skolfield Homes in March of 2003, it quickly became apparent to John that partnering together served the company’s best interests. Anthony got his building contractor's license in 2002 and received a bachelor's degree from Rollins in 2005. John, Anthony, and their excellent staff have produced over $30M of remodeling work in the last decade.

Construction runs in their blood. The Skolfield family history includes six generations of ship building on the coast of Maine. The family built over sixty wooden sailing ships that traveled the world for more than a century. The Rizzo family has a long history of residential construction, starting with Anthony’s grandfather who built several houses and owned a custom furniture and upholstery business. Anthony’s father built several custom homes as well, and became an owner of his grandfather’s upholstery shop. His uncle has been a custom home builder in Winter Park for 35 years, and his father-in law has owned a regional overhead door company for the better part of three decades.

Our office is on the second floor of the small historic home at 118 West Comstock, just to the east of Miller’s Hardware in downtown Winter Park. This places the heart of our operation across the street from the City of Winter Park Building Department and in very close proximity to most of our jobs. Our work usually keeps us in  Winter Park, Maitland, and the north side of downtown Orlando; however, jobs that fit our work profile have been completed in other neighborhoods, states and countries. We currently operate with a staff of four full-time in the office including the owners and twenty craftsman in the field.
